Parenting Workshop Session 1 - Calm First, Connect Second
This session introduces parents to the foundation of the workshop series: the connection between brain states and behavior. Using “Brain 101,” parents explore how the primal/reptilian brain, limbic system, and executive function influence both adult and child responses. When children are upset, parents learn that the first step is not correction, but calming themselves and their child so that higher-level thinking can return.
Through practical strategies such as deep breathing, composure practices, and modeling self-regulation, parents discover how to “calm first” before engaging with their child. Once calm is established, connection becomes the focus. Eye contact, presence, touch, and playfulness are highlighted as powerful tools that literally wire the brain for willingness and impulse control. Parents also practice rituals and simple connection-building activities that strengthen relationships and set the stage for cooperation.
By the end of this session, participants will understand why calm and connection are essential for effective parenting, and they will leave with take-home tools and rituals they can begin using right away to nurture safety, trust, and positive behavior in their children.
