The Things I Thought Mattered… and What Actually Did
What I worried about… and what truly shaped them.
There are so many things I worried about when my kids were little that I barely think about now.
The perfectly balanced lunches.
Whether they were reading early enough.
If I was doing “enough.”
If one hard day meant I was somehow messing everything up.
And now, with children who are 22 and 19, I can honestly say… a lot of those things mattered far less than I thought they did.
What mattered more?
The conversations in the car.
The way home felt after a hard day.
Whether they knew they could come to me without fear or shame.
The moments I let them struggle a little instead of rescuing them immediately.
The times I apologized.
The times we laughed.
Somewhere along the way, my parenting shifted from trying to control every outcome… to helping them build the confidence to trust themselves.
Do I still worry? Of course. I’m a parent. That job description never really expires.
But now I worry less about perfection and more about whether my children know how to think, recover, problem-solve, and listen to their gut when life gets messy.
Because eventually, our goal is not to raise children who never fail. It is to raise children who believe they can handle failure, learn from it, and keep going. That is resilience.
And honestly?
That matters a whole lot more than matching socks ever did.
Wishing you well,
Nicole
